It’s been a while since there’s been a book competition on The Anxious Gardener.
Time to rectify that with an opportunity to win ‘Secret Gardens of the Cotswolds’ published by Frances Lincoln. Here’s what they have to say about it:
Secret Gardens of the Cotswolds is a personal tour of some of the UK’s most exciting and exquisite gardens, guided by the owners, their gardeners and designers. In the golden stone villages of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, author Victoria Summerley and photographer Hugo Rittson-Thomas offer privileged access to twenty secret gardens, revealing their charm, romance, horticulture and history. Retracing the footsteps of such luminary designers as Humphry Repton, Rosemary Verey, Isabel and Julian Bannerman and Mary Keen, we find examples of great design, compelling planting, inspired sculpture and private paradise. From the cherished snowdrop fields of the Elwes family at Colesbourne, to Antony Gormley’s statue in the garden of Matthew Freud and Elisabeth Murdoch, this book uncovers the various and intriguing ways these Cotswolds’ gardens inspire and enchant.
While some of these gardens open regularly to visitors, those that remain strictly private can now be savoured and enjoyed through the eyes of those who know them best.
Victoria Summerley is an award-winning garden journalist and was executive editor of the Independent newspaper in the UK. She lives in Bibury, Gloucestershire, the village once described by William Morris as ‘the most beautiful village in the Cotswolds’.
Hugo Rittson-Thomas is one of the UK’s leading portrait photographers. In 2012 he was privately commissioned to photograph the Cotswolds gardens of Eyford House.
‘Secret Gardens of the Cotswold’ will be published in early February 2015 and retail at £20. If you’d like the chance to win a copy here’s all you need to do:

They won’t be secret for much longer once the book comes out – I have only visited Prince Charles’ garden so far in the Cotswolds – the least secret garden of all! You can put me in the hat for good measure.

I’m not entering (obviously), but wow, what a gorgeous cover photo on that book. Good thing I’m here and not there, or I would have drooled on it (sorry), and then you wouldn’t be able to give it away any more.
Also, I admire how posh you’ve become–using your best hat these days for the drawings.

Yes Stacy. Drooling is a danger and something I fight against almost constantly. To little effect. It’s my age. I said prettiest hat actually – it certainly isn’t my best or poshest. Dave

When I first started gardening some 30 years ago I read a book by Mary Keen and she inspired me then, she had a simple approach, which back then was what I needed. If I won the book I could reconnect with her….. Thank you .

David, I would LOVE to win this book! I believe the photo on the front is of Asthall Manor, which I was lucky enough to visit in June 2014. It was absolutely divine. Living in Sydney at the moment, I miss English gardens so much, and the Cotswolds is one of my very favourite places. If I won, my parents, from Buckinghamshire, could bring the book out to me – I would adore being able to get a ‘fix’ of these gorgeous gardens from afar. Here’s hoping!

I know the Cotswolds a little, but haven’t heard of Asthall. Not surprised that photo made the cover. Good luck, Dave
