Gardening? Pah. It’s gloomy and it’s wet, cold and mushy so who on earth wants to garden. Not me. I’d rather put the kettle on, pop a crumpet (or five) in the toaster and settle down with a good read. And if you fancy doing the same, why I might even send you a free gardening book. This one:
Here is what Jessica at Aurum Publishing has to say about Mr Dowding’s Veg Journal:
“Plan bumper harvests the no-dig way – Charles Dowding’s Veg Journal provides simple steps, experienced advice and seasonal checklists to plan a year’s veg growing. The information is taken from the author’s successful Charles Dowding Vegetable Course and is arranged in a useful monthly journal so that no activity is overlooked and readers can follow his mantra of ‘little and often’.
• find success with more than 35 vegetables and herbs from tomatoes to basil, carrots to coriander;
• start a no-dig veg plot on virgin or dug ground, improve the soil and become an expert mulcher and weeder;
• learn key dates for sowing, staking, harvesting and storing using time-saving monthly checklists;
• make a raised bed, tackle slugs and snails, and produce the sweetest-smelling compost;
• understand the techniques for intercropping, companion planting, seed viability and crop succession.
No-dig is a long-established way to grow healthy, organic crops while preserving the soil’s integrity. Charles Dowding is the UK’s leading expert.”
Charles Dowding’s Veg Journal will be published in February by Frances Lincoln and will retail for £14.99. But if you would like to win your own free copy, here’s what you need to do:
leave a reply/comment to this post saying that you wish to enter and (if you don’t do so already) follow ‘The Anxious Gardener.’ Erm … and that’s it! Easy, huh?
The closing date is midnight on Friday 7th February 2014. I shall draw the winner out of my rather disreputable, mowing Panama and notify the winner by email. Sorry to say that you must be a UK resident to enter (or at least have a UK postal address to which the book can be posted).
Good Luck!

Love your blog! As a fan of Charles Dowding this would be the next best thing to going on one of his courses – Cambridge to Devon is quite a trek! It would help us enormously to get the most out of our ‘productive’ vegetable plot!

I would love to win this (follow you). I am a chaotic, reluctant gardener and have so many disasters under my belt which make me lose confidence, not helped by the dog who digs life threatening craters on my veg plot!. Can’t decide if I love or hate gardening but so want to be more self-sufficient but I need my hand holding and it sounds like your veg journal would help.

I’m already inspired by Mr Dowding’s reassuring words but always intrigued by any new methods he may have trialled. Don’t put me in your panama though as I have, rather serendipitously, just been pulled, like a rabbit, out of Flighty’s hat for a copy of this book. Happy squelching! (If ever there was a winter for not digging, this would be it.)

I’m a keen ‘no dig’ advocate and month by month is the best way to follow a veg book, please toss me in your panama but I’ll let my SIL have the book, should I win as she’s just started an allotment and needs all the help she can get.

Wet? Really? I hadn’t noticed. Much. Apart from when squelching on what should be grass, not bog. I am tempted to ask you to throw me in to your disreputable hat, but since I already have 2 of C.D.s excellent books, I will politely withdraw…

Only if you’re sure, Janet. I don’t think there is a legal maximum to the number of Mr Dowding’s books one is allowed to own. I have generally started to give books away because I struggle and break out into a sweat trying to squeeze yet another one into my bookshelves. D

I’m sorry it’s been so wet and dreary over there. I have a friend in Godalming (which I know isn’t all that close to you, but from here you look like neighbors) who’s had some mighty choice Words to say about the weather. Hope you get some better gardening days soon — or have a good stock of crumpets on standby.
